Kids and the South Dakota Kourts Program

The Kids and the South Dakota Kourts Program is a project to develop an iCivics program focusing on youth education of our court system by creating free and innovative materials about the court system in South Dakota. It is important to teach the next generation to understand and respect the third branch of government, the judicial branch. The South Dakota Unified Judicial System hopes to do so by improving the understanding of and access to the court system in South Dakota.

The Honorable Sandra Day O’Connor, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, has long been an advocate of civic education. Justice O’Connor believes that "those who are less knowledgeable about the judiciary are more likely to believe that judges are biased and less likely to believe that the courts act in the public interest." Justice O’Connor founded "iCivics" to prepare young Americans to become knowledgeable, engaged 21st century citizens by creating free and innovative educational materials. The South Dakota website can also provide a link to the national "iCivics" website (http://www.icivics.org/About) that provides 16 educational video games and vibrant teaching materials.
