First Circuit Statistics

The First Judicial Circuit is comprised of fourteen counties in southeast South Dakota including: Aurora, Bon Homme, Brule, Buffalo, Charles Mix, Clay, Davison, Douglas, Hanson, Hutchinson, McCook, Turner, Union and Yankton.The first Circuit had a population of 122,787 in 2006 and covers an area of 8,432 Square miles.

During Fiscal Year 2008 (July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008), the First Circuit processed…

  • Criminal files: 811 felonies, 2,984 Class One Misdemeanors, and another 20,930 Class Two Misdemeanors and Petty Offenses.
  • Domestic Relations and Protection Order filings: 1,555
  • Civil and Probate filings: 3,402
  • Juvenile matters: 1,158 cases
  • Small Claims actions: 4,510
  • Miscellaneous filings: 1,310
  • Criminal, Civil and Money Judgment record searches: 15,232
  • Child support receipts: 1,005 (those receipts not processed through Child Support Enforcement)
Other statistics in FY2008 include:
  • Collected nearly $6 million in fines, fees, deposits and other costs.
  • Disbursed nearly $6 million to the State, counties, victims and other recipients
  • Held 26 jury trials
  • Maintain 70.4 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions including judges, court administration staff, clerk of courts staff, bailiffs, court services (probation) staff, and law clerks.
