Charlene Miller is the new Brule and Buffalo Clerk of Court

03/09/2016

Charlene Miller has been appointed by Presiding First Circuit Judge Steven Jensen as the new Brule and Buffalo County Clerk of Courts. Ms. Miller is replacing Doris Juhnke who recently retired after over 40 years of service with the State of South Dakota. Charlene is a graduate of Oxnard College in California with an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Science. She has worked for the Unified Judicial System for 20 years as a Court Services Support Staff and an On-Call Deputy Court Clerk.

The Clerk is responsible for managing the Clerk of Court’s office, which maintains all records and files of the court system for both Brule and Buffalo County. This includes all civil, criminal, probate, and traffic files. In addition, as a Clerk Magistrate, the Clerk of Court can perform weddings, set bonds, issue arrest and search warrants, and hold court on petty offenses and certain misdemeanors. The Clerk of Court’s office is located in the Brule County Courthouse, 300 S. Courtland, Chamberlain, SD.

Originally, the Clerk of Courts in each county was elected by county voters. However, as a result of a constitutional amendment unifying the court system in 1975, the position of Clerk of Courts became an appointed position by the Presiding Judge of each circuit. Presiding Judge Jensen of Elk Point was extremely impressed by Ms. Miller’s skills, experience, and past record of accomplishment and excellence with the Unified Judicial System. He stated that “Ms. Miller’s experience and abilities will ensure that the Brule and Buffalo County Clerk of Court’s office will continue to provide a superior level of services to the residents of Brule and Buffalo County and the 1st Judicial Circuit.”

The First Circuit covers 14 counties in southeast South Dakota.
