Sixth Circuit

The Sixth Judicial Circuit Court is served by four circuit court judges, one magistrate judge, and court clerk magistrates serving each county in the circuit. Assisting the presiding judge is an appointed circuit court administrator and a chief court services officer. Circuit administrative offices are located in the Hughes County Courthouse, 104 E. Capitol Ave., Pierre, SD.

The Sixth Judicial Circuit...


  • handles about 43,000 cases per year (state fiscal year 2011). Of those, about 39,000 are minor, traffic, and criminal cases, and about 4,000 are civil, small claims, domestic and others.

  • employs about 40 people to serve the public, including judges, court clerks, court services (probation) staff, court reporters, court administration staff, bailiffs, and law clerks.

  • collected about $2.5 million in fines, fees, deposits, and other costs, and disbursed about $2.6 million to the State, counties, victims, and other recipients in Fiscal Year 2011.

  • has a state operating budget of about $2.63 million in FY2011.
