Juvenile Justice Annual Report Released
PIERRE, S.D. – The Juvenile Justice Public Safety Improvement Act (JJPSIA) Oversight Council has released its fourth annual report. The Oversight Council is the statutorily authorized entity to monitor the juvenile justice reforms and propose necessary legislation related to juvenile justice.
The reforms focused on increasing public safety by improving outcomes of youth and families, holding juveniles accountable, and reducing costs by investing in community-based practices.
Highlights from the report include:

The average length of stay for In-State DOC Paid Group Care has maintained at the target goal of four months for the past three fiscal years.

In FY19, UJS referrals for treatment services increased by 30 percent, DOC referrals increased by 24 percent, and other referrals decreased by 25

percent over the previous year. Overall, referrals for treatment services increased by 2% in FY19.

The number of youth on probation and probation violations filed remained consistent with previous years.
