PIERRE, S.D.—South Dakota Supreme Court Chief Justice Steven R. Jensen invites the public to attend the Court’s March Term of Court at Black Hills State University in Spearfish on March 25-26, 2025.
The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in three cases the morning of Tuesday, March 25, and three cases the morning of Wednesday, March 26. The sessions will be held in the Jacket Legacy Room in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union, 1200 University St., Spearfish. Oral arguments begin at 9 a.m. MDT both mornings.
“The South Dakota Supreme Court is committed to making the judicial process accessible and transparent to all South Dakotans. Our traveling terms of court provide the public with an opportunity to witness the appellate process firsthand and gain a deeper understanding of how our legal system functions,” Chief Justice Jensen said. “We encourage students, educators and community members to attend these sessions and experience the work of the Court in action.”
Prior to court both days, a Court employee will provide a brief history of the South Dakota Supreme Court and explain what attendees will see that day in the court process, who is involved in the cases, and what happens after oral arguments are heard. The judicial primer will begin at 8:40 a.m. MDT.
Following oral arguments both days, high school and college students can ask questions of the Supreme Court Justices. The judicial Q&A will begin at approximately 11:15 a.m. MDT.
Booklets containing a schedule of the cases to be heard, a short synopsis of each case, biographical information on the Supreme Court justices and a short summary of appellate procedure can be found on the Unified Judicial System website here.
