Bulk Court Records Request

Learn how how the public can submit a request for large volumes of court records or compiled information from court records that is publicly accessible but not already available in an existing report.

Requests for access to large volumes of court records, often for research, data analysis or commercial purposes, rather than for individual case information are referred to as bulk court records requests.

Any member of the public may request compiled information that is publicly accessible and that is not already available in an existing report. The State Court Administrator's Office may compile and provide the information if it determines, in its discretion, that providing the information meets criteria established by the Court, that the resources are available to compile the information, and that it is an appropriate use of public resources.

Dissemination of bulk court record information for resale is prohibited pursuant to ยง 1-27-1. Any other bulk dissemination is prohibited except as authorized by the State Court Administrator or the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. SDCL 15-15A-11

Make a Request

SDCL 15-15A-12 lays out the process to access compiled information from court records. Bulk court records requests must include the following details:

  1. Identify what information is sought.
  2. Describe the purpose for requesting the information and explain how the information will benefit the public interest or public education.
  3.  Explain provisions for the secure protection of any information requested to which public access is restricted or prohibited.
