Celebrate Court Reporting, Court Recorders and Captioners Week on Feb. 3-10, 2024
PIERRE, S.D.— Court reporters, recorders and captioners use cutting-edge technology to bring the spoken word to text accurately in real time. Their unique skills are in high demand and so are job opportunities.
Gov. Kristi Noem and Supreme Court Chief Justice Steven R. Jensen have proclaimed Feb. 3-10, 2024, Court Reporting, Court Recorders and Captioners Week in South Dakota. These professions work both in and out of the courtroom recording legal cases and dispositions, providing live captioning of events, and assisting members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities with gaining access to information, entertainment, educational opportunities and more.
National Court Reporting and Captioning Week is designated each February to celebrate these professions and help raise public awareness about the growing number of employment opportunities these careers offer. Stenographic skills translate into a multitude of career options including court reporting, live-event captioning for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, and captioning for broadcast.
This week is an opportunity for members of the public who might not be familiar with what stenographic court reporters and captioners do to learn more about the profession and the vital role they play in the judicial system, the business world, and in providing access to information for those in the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. Learn more by visiting the National Court Reporters Association website at https://www.ncra.org.
The South Dakota Unified Judicial System has job opportunities for court reporters. To learn more, visit https://ujs.sd.gov/Careers/JobOpenings.aspx.
