Commission on Indigent Legal Services to Meet on October 16
PIERRE, S.D.— The South Dakota Commission on Indigent Legal Services will meet virtually on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024, at 11 a.m. CDT.
The Commission oversees indigent legal services in South Dakota’s court system where there is a right to counsel under state or federal law. The Commission also oversees the Office of Indigent Legal Services to provide statewide indigent representation services in appeals of criminal, habeas corpus, and abuse or neglect of a child cases.
The meeting agenda includes a report from Chief Defender Chris Miles on transition of the new Office of Indigent Legal Services, discussion of the Sixth Amendment Center (6AC) report titled “The Right to Counsel in South Dakota: Evaluation of Trial-Level Indigent Defense Representation in Adult Criminal Cases” and the Commission on Indigent Legal Services’ next steps.
